Retro Commercial: Carlton Jams With the Jacksons
Since I was fairly busy during the end of last week, Michael Jackson's 50th birthday crept up on me like that panther in his "Black or White" video. This, combined with the fact that it's been awhile since I've done a Retro Commercial post led me to dig up this Pepsi spot from 1984. Making its debut on the Grammy telecast that year, this commercial featured The Jacksons and also introduced

"He just smiled and gave me a Vegemite sandwich."Men at Work: Land Down UnderAfter commenting on a string of posts by Mrs. C about her family's latest venture down Vegemite Lane, she offered to mail me some.I, naturally, accepted. And it arrived today. So, once we get some wheat-free bread made, we'll give this a "go" and see just how much I dislike it (all on video!). Definitely does not sound

Old School Friday: Neo Soul
For this week's theme, I selected my favorite song by a group that didn't get the attention I felt they deserved... The Brand New Heavies. Featuring N'Dea Davenport on lead vocals, this is Never Stop (from their 1991 self-titled album)This meme was developed by Marvalus View and Ms. Grapevine. The rules are simple: 1. Anyone can participate; any music genre2. Old School is defined as music

Thursday Thirteen #55: Real Names of TV Characters
Real Names of 13 TV CharactersLast summer for one of my first T13s, I listed the real names of TV characters who normally used their nicknames (you can click here to see it). Since there were so many from which to choose, I decided to revisit the topic this week. When you get a load of some these character's real names (Bosco?), it's easy to see why they ditched them in favor of an alternate

Final Results of Steven Bochco Poll
In a victory that I find stunning, the ABC dramedy that introduced many of us to Neil Patrick Harris (Doogie Howser, M.D.) was voted as your favorite Steven Bochco production. It's not that I didn't like Doogie Howser, M.D.... quite the contrary. Just as many of you did, Doogie Howser, M.D. was one of the shows that I watched regularly when it aired Wednesday nights on ABC. What surprised

Summer Breeze
Twenty days back in the states and I'm already plotting my escape. Doesn't take long. My excuse is Boxing Day matches - Chelsea of course, and RSC is moving the production of Hamlet to London in November. Yes, Patrick Stewartand David Tennant were that brilliant. Oliver Ford Davies is now my favourite Polonius interpretation. He's part doddering uncle who tells the same story over and over and
Old School Fridays: Favorite Male Singer
When it comes to male vocalists, it's hard to top the man from Meridian, MS... David Ruffin. One aspect of his voice that I have come to appreciate over the years is its versatility. Not only could he tackle soul numbers (both uptempo and slow), but David could handle show tunes & standards (as he did with the rest of the fellas on their 1967 album The Temptations In A Mellow Mood). The song I

Thursday Thirteen #54: Short-lived TV Series
Thirteen of my favorite short-lived TV seriesIf you are like me, you have probably developed attachments to new series only to see the networks yank them off the air prematurely. It really gets frustrating when a promising show gets bounced early on while less deserving series are allowed to litter the airwaves for season after season. Below (in alphabetical order) are 13 of my favorite series

Final Results of the Recent Box-Office Champ Poll
In last week's poll in which I asked if you felt that The Dark Knight would surpass Titanic to become the all-time box office champ, just over half of you said yes. There were some good theories by voters as to why The Dark Knight would or wouldn't overtake Titanic. As some of you said, the hype factor surrounding The Dark Knight and the fact that it's Heath Ledger's last completed film may

Old School Fridays: Social/Political Songs
For my social/political song, I decided to showcase James Brown's classic tune from 1968... Say It Loud, I'm Black and I'm Proud. The performance below is from the 1969-1970 syndicated show Playboy After Dark. This meme was developed by Marvalus View and Ms. Grapevine. The rules are simple: 1. Anyone can participate; any music genre2. Old School is defined as music created before 19993. No

Thursday Thirteen #53: Girls, Girls, Girls
12 of Elvis' Leading Ladies, Plus 1 Almost Co-star During his career, Elvis starred in over 30 films. Some were fairly good, while most were just an excuse to put The Pelvis in an exotic setting. Besides plenty of tunes, one thing that was practically a given with an Elvis pic is that he would be surrounded by a bevy of babes. Below in chronological order are 12 of Elvis' leading ladies,

Another Side of Isaac Hayes
Just like everyone else, I was shocked when I learned that Isaac Hayes unexpectedly died on Sunday at the age of 65. When reading the various online stories/tributes about Hayes' death, most of the writers focused on Isaac's undeniable influence on popular music and his role as the voice of "Chef" on the animated series South Park. Since I had nothing unique to add from either of those angles, I

Final Results of the Recent Reunion Poll
With just a shade over half the vote, ex-Journey frontman Steve Perry was the one most of you wanted to see rejoin his former bandmates. Even though (as stated on Steve Perry's Wikipedia page) tensions between he and his ex-bandmates were reduced when he appeared with them at Journey's star unveiling at the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2005, a reunion seems unlikely at this moment. At this time,

Bernie Mac Dies At the Age of 50
Actor and comedian Bernie Mac, perhaps best known for starring in his self-titled sitcom and for his appearances in the Ocean's Eleven films, died early Saturday morning at the age of 50. According to his publicist, he succumbed due to complications from pneumonia in a Chicago-area hospital. Mac had suffered from sarcoidosis, a tissue inflammation disease, but it was believed to have gone in
The Joys of Caravaning
I took a nice weekend and "penciled myself in" to the diaries of my mates A and K who had purchased a caravan during the winter. I have been looking forward to this weekend ever since. Many Friday's I get reports from A that the caravan is being prepped for a weekend of merry making. It was to much fun to be missed and I had to get on board (not a great space coaster, but something similar -
Ah the Things I have Forgotten
Someone once said "I have forgotten more things than you ever knew." Or something to that effect. It was a movie, of course, and the line has always stuck in my mind. Why random lines from movies stick, when other things such as paying bills, where I put the car keys, birthdays, and just about everything else falls into that random black hole void in my head is unknown. I do realize that I

Old School Fridays: Rock Songs
The theme for Old School Fridays this week is rock songs. My selection is by a band that caused eyebrows to arch when they came on the scene in the late 1980s... the Black rock combo Living Colour. Although Chuck Berry and Little Richard helped lay the groundwork for rock and roll in the 1950s, the advent of soul music saw the number of Black rockers dwindle (Jimi Hendrix being one of the rare

Flannel Receiving Blankets
My really cool serger has this great little stitch called a rolled hem. It looks like this (red stitching):Sharlene gave me this great idea to use this fabulous little stitch to make flannel recieving blankets with two pieces of flannel. These are two I made for my sister, Lexie and her baby, Jaxon. They are super easy, and turned out really cute!
Chenille Volcano!
Okay, so Stephanie asked where I got all of the vintage chenille fabric for the quilts that I have made. Well. . . my girls call it their "volcano", as it is currently residing in their bedroom. And no, there is not just one pile of these huge chenille bedspreads, and not two either, but three piles all over my house! They are huge and messy and I am in the process of downsizing my collection (

Things I Miss
So I've been back in the states for three days. It's distinctly different. It's like being in the USA breeds laziness and apathy. I think I've left the house once - that's not counting taking Goldy for a walk, and I drove there. Yup. LOL So even tho I am grooving on central air conditioning, napping with Goldy and Molly, my car, re-runs of X-Files, new episodes of Burn Notice and Eureka! So here

Silence Is Golden
For the month of August, Turner Classic Movies is doing their annual "Summer Under the Stars" festival in which they devote an entire day to one star. This past Saturday, that star was the legendary Charlie Chaplin. At first I was indifferent and didn't have plans to watch TCM that day. I then had to call myself out. For awhile now I've been meaning to check out some silent movies and since a

Old School Fridays: Motown
The theme for Old School Fridays this week focuses on the label originally known as The Sound of Young America. However, I think it has evolved to become the Sound of Damned Near Everyone. Although I know that they exist somewhere, you will be hard pressed to find someone who doesn't like even just a little Motown. The artist that I chose to spotlight is one that sometimes gets overlooked when
